Ajman Marina development is a good example of how a cluster of tall buildings brings benefits to the public realm. The tall buildings, arranged in three height clusters, act as anchors to attract people from around the site to live, work and play. Ajman will not be mini-Manhattan; its focus is connecting community uses to the public realm and surrounding buildings.
The master plan for the 26 hectare Ajman Marina integrates the site with the existing urban fabric, connecting business, retail and residential uses. The scheme embraces the historic coastline with its original port which has influenced the design of the public space around the harbour and the provision of a range of new and diverse leisure opportunities to create an animated and inviting promenade. Ajman Marina will become the first development in the UAE with activities created around a marina allowing for food and alcoholic beverages to be consumed outside of hotel complexes.
The undulating curves and distinctive veiled appearance of the two 45-storey high rise towers will become a landmark on Ajman’s skyline. The handsome, fluid towers are inspired by the region’s traditional dancing forms and are veiled in a steel-framed diagrid structure to help reduce thermal gain. These distinctive elevations change from opaque to translucent as the observer moves around the buildings.
The Marina buildings form a continuum around the quayside’s sweeping arc and the horizontal and vertical forms pull together in elegant and dramatic movements that surge skywards. The architectural masses are ingeniously sliced and rotated to mimic natural wind forms creating optimum views towards the sea.
